Braid 10-Double Waterfall Braids and Fishtail Bun is the fancy, updo version of Braid 20-Double Headband Waterfall Braid from “20 Braids for Spring.”
The first time I pulled this look together I finished with a regular donut bun but it didn’t do the trick for me. I had to dress it up a little bit more so I braided the hair into fishtail braids before wrapping them into a more elegant low bun.
I also snuck in two braids on the other side so it wasn’t a blank slate and really love how the looked came together.
It may seem a little tricky but with a little practice it’ll be as easy as any other braid.
Here are the steps to completing the look:
Step 1 / Begin with right sided part.
Step 2 / Next, separate the left side into two portions, front and back, and pin the front part out of the way.
Step 3 / Then take a section, right at the part, from the back portion and separate it into three pieces.
Step 4 / Cross the back strand over the middle then the front strand over the middle to begin a french braid.
Step 5 / Next, cross the back strand over the middle and add in a section of hair from behind it, adding it into the strand.
Step 6 / With the front strand that would cross over the middle next, drop it down or pull it to the opposite side of the head and pin it out of the way.
Step 7 / Pick up a section of hair right below the pinned strand and add it in its place.
Step 8 / Repeat this waterfall braiding until reaching the nape of the neck.
Step 9 / At the bottom, tie off the braid with a hair tie to work on the next braid section.
Step 10 / Let down the waterfall strands and the front section that was tied off.
Step 11 / Take a section right at the part and divide it into three pieces for a new french braid.
Step 12 / Complete a regular french braid pulling int the waterfall strands when cross the back strand over the middle.
Step 13 / Once the braid reaches the first one, tie it off as well.
Step 14 / Next, take a small section of hair, about an 1 inch, on the other side of the part and braid the hair down into a regular braid.
Step 15 / Repeat step 14 with another section of hair so there are two regular braids on the right side of the head.
Step 16 / Then gather all the hair into a low, side ponytail.
Step 17 / Pull out the hair elastics from the two side braids and any other ties from the first ones.
Step 18 / Separate the ponytail into two halves and braid each one into a regular fishtail braid.
Step 19 / Next, take one of the braids and wrap it around the hair tie to create a bun.
Step 20 / Take the second braid, wrapping it around the first to create a more intricate looking bun.
Finished! I hope you love it and give it a try!

I absolutely love these braids! I hope my hair is long enough to do them. Would layers make this impossible or do you think I could still pull it off?

It depends on how long your layers are. The ends might stick out of the braid but you could still give it a try (:
