Inverted fishtail braids have been cropping up everywhere lately! They are so gorgeous and an easy way to change up your typical fishtail braid. I love the headband version {tutorial here} and thought it was high time to take it to the next level. Using the Waterfall and Fishtail French Braids tutorial as a reference, I traded out the normal fishtail portion with an inverted version and voila! This hairstyle is now the newest version of the look. I hope you love it and try it out!
You can see the last time I wore it here so thank you to those who commented on instagram asking for the tutorial!
Waterfall and Inverted Fishtail Braid:
- Step 1 / With a part on the right side, separate out a portion of hair from the part down to the left ear.
- Step 2 / Clip off the back portion.
- Step 3 / Pick up a section of hair on the heavy side of the part and divide it into three pieces.
- Step 4 / Cross the back strand over the middle then the front strand over the middle.
- Step 5 / Begin a waterfall braid by dropping down the back strand, clipping it out of the way, pick up a replacement section of hair and add it in its place.
- Step 6 / Cross the front strand over the middle and bring in a section of hair.
- Step 7 / Repeat steps 5 and until all the hair is brought into the braid then braid the rest of the hair in a regular braid.
- Step 8 / Tie off the end of the hair with a clear elastic band.
- Step 9 / Remove the clip holding the waterfall strands.
- Step 10 / Pick up another section of hair directly behind the first braid and divide it into two pieces.
- Step 11 / Take a small section of hair from the back half, cross it underneath and add it into the front half.
- Step 12 / Cross a small section of hair from the front half underneath and add it into the back half.
- Step 13 / Repeat step 11, crossing hair underneath but also pick up a section of hair and incorporate it into the strand.
- Step 14 / Now repeat step 12, crossing a section underneath but pick up the first waterfall strand, crossing it underneath and adding it into the back half as well.
- Step 15 / Continue braiding, repeating steps 13 and 14 until all the hair is braided in.
- Step 16 / One all the hair is brought in, braid the hair down in a regular style fishtail braid.
- Step 17 / Tie off the end with a clear elastic band.
- Step 18 / Gently go back and loosen the edges of the braid to make it fuller and more voluminous.
