Today’s tutorial was inspired by the Half Wrapped Bun that I recently shared. I wanted to try the same type of style but with a more textured bun and love how this one turned out.

The key for this style is to make the twists big enough to cover the hair padding underneath. If you have thinner hair you can try using a smaller hair cushion or clip in some extensions for extra volume. I think this would be so pretty with a smaller bun and would even work with any type of braid – french braid, dutch braid, whichever type is your favorite!

Twist Braid and Twisted Bun Supplies:

• Rattail comb
• Hair sectioning clip
• Clear elastic
• Bobby pins
• Hair padding
• Medium-hold hairspray
• Strong-hold hairspray

Twist Braid and Twisted Bun Instructions:

• Step 1 / Begin by parting the hair on the right side.
• Step 2 / Divide out a section of hair on the left side, from the part down to the left ear and clip away the forward hair.
• Step 3 / Combine the remaining hair and tie it into a low ponytail above the nape of the neck.
• Step 4 / Take two bobby pins and slide them over an elastic band so there’s one on each side of the elastic.
• Step 5 / Flip the ponytail up towards the top of the head and slide one bobby pin underneath the ponytail on the right side about an inch above the base of the ponytail.
• Step 6 / Wrap the elastic over the top of the ponytail hair, and then slide the other bobby pin underneath the ponytail on the left side.
• Step 7 / Grab a hair cushion and place this over the two elastic bands, near the nape of the neck and slide some bobby pins around the edges to hold it in place.
• Step 8 / Lay the ends of the ponytail over the hair cushion and divide it into four sections.
• Step 9 / Take the left most section from the ponytail, twist it together towards the right side, and then lay it over the hair cushion on the left side.
• Step 10 / Pin the twist against the cushion with a bobby pin at the center and then go back over the twist, pulling on the edges to make it really big and full.
• Step 11 / Then pin the twist again at the base of the bun.
• Step 12 / Pick up a new section of hair from the ponytail, next to the previous section. Twist this section together towards the left, pull on the edges to make it bigger and more full and then pin it next to the first twist, at the base of the bun.

• Step 13 / Repeat those same steps with the two remaining sections of hair, creating two more twisted sections, pinning them over the hair cushion on the right side.
  • Tip: Make sure to pull the twists large enough that they hide any gaps between the twists. You want to hide as much of the hair cushion as you can with the hair.
• Step 14 / Now take the hair that’s sticking out the bottom of the bun and divide this into two sections.
• Step 15 / Taking the left section, twist this together, pull on the edges to make it bigger and lay it along the left side of the bun, pinning it in place at the top.
• Step 16 / Then do the same thing with the hair on the right side, wrapping it up the right side of the bun and pinning it at the top.
• Step 17 / Now let down the hair that was clipped away at the beginning and divide out a small section near the part for the twist braid.
• Step 18 / Split this section into two pieces and cross the left strand over the right strand.
• Step 19 / Add a new section of hair into bother sides and cross the left strand over the right strand again.
• Step 20 / Repeat those steps adding new sections into each side, twisting each section towards the face and crossing the left strand over the right strand.
• Step 21 / Once all of the hair is brought into the braid then continue the twist down to the ends.
• Step 22 / Go back over the twist and pull on the edges to make it bigger and more full.
• Step 23 / Lay the braid over the top of the bun and pin it in place with bobby pins.
• Step 24 / Set everything in place with hairspray and smooth down any flyaways.
