Braid 7-Fishtail Ponytail is one of my favorite braids for Summer along with the Mohawk Dutch Braid!
This hairstyle is super easy to do and a regular braid can even be substituted in if you aren’t keen on fishtail braids. It is perfect for the beach, a day at the pool, and even on wet hair, which is especially nice now that I have packed away my curling irons until Fall! (This challenge is a ton harder to do than I thought it would be!)
Grab your favorite hair elastic and let’s get to work creating this beauty of a braid!
Step 1 / Sweep all your hair into a high ponytail and tie it off with an elastic band. (*Here are some great tips to Master the High Ponytail.)
Step 2 / Next, divide the ponytail into two halves.
Step 3 / Take a smaller section of hair from the left side and separate it out. Here’s a video on How to Fishtail Braid if you prefer that to pictures.
Step 4 / Cross the smaller strand over the top and add it into the right section.
Step 5 / Now, take a smaller section from the right side and separate it from the rest.
Step 6 / Cross the strand over the top and add it into the left side.
Step 7 / Continue cross small strands over the top to the opposite side, creating a fishtail braid.
Step 8 / Tie off the tail with an elastic band.
Step 9 / Gently loosen the braid to create a more casual effect.

You should do a video of all your hairstyles!! I learn so much better watching it being done haha. Unless you have a video and you just didn’t post it on this page, just on youtube??

Hi Natasha, (: I don’t have a video of this exact hairstyle but one of how to do a fishtail braid. I will see what I can do for a video of this style though! Thanks for reading!

Hi! Your hair tutorials are so great, and I’m going to do this one for the 4th! I did have a quick question, though. I could be mistaken, but Step 4 says to cross the strand over the top and add it to the left section. Should that maybe be the right section, or am I backwards?? Thank you & happy 4th!! :)

Hahah whoops! No you’re right, it’s a typo, cross it over to the right section. Fixing it right now…
