Graduating from college was one of the most rewarding and disappointing days I have ever experienced. I was proud of myself for enduring the struggle, completing a degree, and achieving as a young adult. I was, however, disappointed that my time there on campus was over. I was anxious at the time to move on; step into bigger and better things. I did not have very many plans but was optimistic about what the future beheld. Moving away from the small town where the school was, I began the arduous search for employment.
Through the years I am constantly reminded of the memories that were made during those college years. They were the best years of my life and I am more than grateful that I was able to experience them. Moving away from home taught me how to take care of myself. College and the life that it lends taught me many things about being an independent individual. I registered my own car for the first time, found a job all on my own, and made friends from all over the world.
It was a trying time; on more than one occasion only having $8 in my pocket for groceries; floss became a luxury. Through all the struggle, however, the value of hard work was learned. Attending school, working part-time, nannying a toddler, tutoring three different students in math taught me how far I could stretch. I was consistently busy, it was rewarding but it all paid off. Making ends meet and saving for the next semester’s tuition taught me how to succeed and I thrived on the energy.
I will never forget the friends I made, the classes I enjoyed, the atmosphere walking along the sidewalks on campus, fallen leaves crunching under my feet, a scarf wrapped tightly around me. I learned more about myself during those few years than I had in all the years previously and would do it all over again in a heartbeat.
