Washing makeup brushes on a regular basis is so important for keeping your skin and makeup application more hygienic. It is one of those chores that I absolutely dread and always postpone it way too long. I have quite a few makeup brushes so it always seems to take forever. I love when they’re clean though so I’ve developed a quick routine that really helps get those brushes sparkling clean.
I started using simple baby soap to clean mine on a regular basis because it’s gentle, affordable, and doesn’t ruin them. I know this because my brushes are still in new condition after years of use and regular washings.
How to Wash Makeup Brushes
Step 1 / Begin by wetting the brushes with warm water; hot water can loosen the glue in the brush. Make sure the bristles are pointed downwards so water doesn’t seep into the handle.
Step 2 / Cup your hand and pump or squeeze a quarter sized amount of soap into it.
Step 3 / Swirl the bristles into the soap and rub it against the hand. This helps to really deep clean the brushes. Add more soap and continue lathering any orange areas until the top turns back to it’s natural white shade.
Step 4 / Rinse the brush under running water while rubbing it against the hand to ensure all the soap has been flushed out.
Step 5 / Once the water runs clear, squeeze the bristles of the brush to clear out any excess water. Then gently squeeze the bristles together with a towel to remove more water.
Step 6 / Lay the brush on an open shelf or so the bristles hang over a ledge. This will speed up the drying time which usually takes at least 24 hours.
Ipsy Glam bag and Birchbox are a monthly beauty subscription that sends mini and full-size samples of products right to your front door. I love receiving them every month and always look forward to seeing what will be in each one. Today I decided to wait and open them together to see which beauty box would be my favorite. Here is what I received in each one.
Stila Look at Me Lipstick, Bella, $20 – This is a creamy, matte formula that glides on like with the staying power of a stain. I love receiving lip products and this bold pink color is right up my alley. Everything matte is always my favorite so this products was definitely a bonus.
Benefit They’re Real, Push-up Liner, $24 – Quick drying, matte finish that is smudgeproof, waterproof, and unbudgeable. This was definitely difficult to remove but it was also difficult to apply. It requires squeezing the bottle until the product pops out the top; because it kind of oozed out it was hard to apply a clean cut line.
Dr. Jart+ Ceramidin Liquid, $39 – A primer that binds skin cells, sealing in moisture. This liquid is recommended before the cream version. Luckily I have the cream so I was really excited to receive the liquid too. This has a semi-medical smell but I am excited to use it up.
Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray, $42 – Part dry shampoo, part texturizing spray, this product soaks up oil, adds texture, while adding a bit of hold. I own this product in the full size so when I received the small sample I wasn’t too excited about it. I am also not a huge fan of the product itself so this was kind of a bummer to receive.
Real Chemistry Luminous 3-Minute Peel, $48 – A protein peel that gently exfoliates delicate skin without being abrasive. This came with two samples, each with enough product for one use. I didn’t really see a difference after both uses so it’s hard to say how beneficial this product was. After the two applications, I wasn’t too keen on the product and most likely will not purchase a full-size.

Jersey Shore Cosmetics, Mongongo Vanilla Coconut Cream Lip Conditioner – A lip treatment that leaves lips silky-smooth, luscious and hydrated. This is your typical everyday lip balm. I didn’t find anything extraordinary about it but it does what it says. I do love that it came in the full-size so I will definitely use this product up.
Teeez Cosmetics, Read My Lips Lipstick – Highly pigmented coverage with a unique satin, matte finish. It’s definitely creamy and smooth and I like the color which is on the coral/peach side. I would recommend using a liner with this shade which is great for Summer.
City Color Cosmetics, HD Powder – An HD powder to set your foundation for a smooth, matte finish. I love me some HD Powder, especially when it’s translucent. This powder is so fine that it feels silky smooth between the fingers. This was a great product to add my beauty kit.
OFRA Cosmetics, Bliss Eyeshadow – Shimmery powder that can be used as an eyeshadow or highlighting powder. This shade is gorgeous and is a beautiful “natural” shade. I love it 100%.
Eva NYC, Freshen Up Dry Shampoo – Revives lifeless hair by removing excess oil and adding instant volume. Dry shampoo is always a must for me because I love to go as long as I can between washes. This small sample size is perfect for taking on trips and I actually took it with me over the weekend for my girls getaway.
If you want to try out Ipsy for yourself, it’s only $10 a month and easy to sign up at Ipsy.com!
Between the two beauty boxes this month, I would say Ipsy takes the cake. I loved 4 out of the 5 products versus only 2 out of 5 from Birchbox. If you would like to receive your own beauty boxes, right to your front door, be sure to sign up today!
This makeup look is perfect for Summer because it is super quick and easy to do. It only requires 8 products and really only 7 since I decided to add in some eyeliner at the very end. I think you could even leave out the powder and concealer and swap the lipstick for lip balm if you really wanted to scale back even more. I didn’t do anything with my brows because I dye them every month. I do it myself and have an old tutorial, here, if you want to see how I do it.
You seriously won’t believe how fast this makeup tutorial is done. Of course, I don’t go into great detail since most of it is just where the makeup is applied. I admit I am a slight makeup junkie and love wearing makeup. Putting it on in the morning is almost relaxing and definitely “me” time while Cohen is taking his morning nap. If you love this tutorial be sure to give the video is a thumbs up on YouTube (here) but let me know if you like to slower, more in-depth makeup tutorials! Ciao!
We have been spending every weekend at the lake this summer so I thought it would be fun to share what I take every time we go. I literally pack a gigantic bag of stuff each time. Now that I have a new baby it is always necessary to keep some essential items with me at all times; diapers especially!
This video will be a part of a summer series I am doing where I will share what I take with me to the lake (beach bag!), a great makeup look that is light and easy for summer, and a cute hairstyle that is super chic and on trend this season! Stay tuned for the other videos coming later this week and I hope you enjoy them!
I was feeling like it was time for another Get Ready with Me video so here it is! This is what I normally wear when I plan on filming. It is a full-coverage look which I prefer when I am making a hair tutorial or video in general. Leave me a comment below if you’d like to see a lighter look for a trip to the lake or day at the beach and I hope you enjoy it!
